Harvey County OKs bids for 2026 road projects, favors separated multimodal path for East 1st St.

Harvey County commissioners authorized Road & Bridge staff to advertise 2026 budgeted projects for bid, including hot mix asphalt paving covering 9.6 miles, a microsurfacing program for 20 miles of roadway and a reinforced concrete box replacement for the K-15.9 bridge on NW 12th St. just west of N. Ridge Road.
Road & Bridge Superintendent Jim Meier said he and County Administrator Kevin Frymire met with City of Newton staff about design guidance for the East 1st Street renovation. Both county staff and the city representative signaled a preference for a separated multimodal (bike/walk) path, which Meier said is the safer option and, according to the city representative, may also be less expensive and open additional grant funding opportunities.
