Greg Green, assistant fire chief, told the committee the swing space is essential to keep a fire engine in the New Monterey neighborhood and to protect the city's investment in equipment. "It allows us to keep that fire engine in the new Monterey neighborhood and in our jurisdiction for that," he said. Ken Hutchinson, vice president of the Monterey Firefighters Association, also supported the funding as consistent with relocation costs from similar past remodels.
Staff noted building permits are complete and the remaining step is contractor award and specification review. Committee members voted by roll call; the motion passed following the public-safety justification and staff explanations. The committee directed staff to return implementation details and timeline as the contractor procurement proceeds.
The action is part of a larger NCIP packet that included multiple project funding adjustments presented by staff earlier in the meeting.
