Albany County committee sets public hearing on parental-responsibility local law after concerns about impact on mothers

Staff said the measure is sponsored by Mr. Robinson and committee members agreed to move the hearing date to Aug. 25.
A committee member who spoke during the item urged colleagues to consider equity concerns, arguing the law could have a disproportionate effect on women. "I'd ask you to consider the disproportionate impact on women of, such a bill," the committee member said, adding that more than 80% of single-parent families are maintained by mothers and that enforcement could create difficult trade-offs for parents balancing work and childcare.
Another member, identified as Gary, said he would support holding the public hearing to hear public comment but reserved his ultimate vote on the law's merits until after the hearing. The committee also moved to table a request to secure a sponsor for the measure pending public input. No final decision on the substance of the local law was made; the hearing will allow residents and stakeholders to comment before any sponsor or committee vote on adoption.
