Commission approves $56,400 not-to-exceed payment to repair BOMAG compactor

The Butler County Commission on June 30 approved repairs for a BOMAG compactor at the county landfill after staff reported a wheel motor failure. Public Works Director Curtis Mader briefed commissioners on two options: replace the motor at an estimated $49,045.97 or rebuild it for $26,045.44. Staff recommended replacement to reduce risk of repeat failures and downtime.
"Although the replacement cost is higher, staff recommends replacing the wheel motor to provide a more reliable backup machine and reduce the risk of future downtime and additional repair expenses," Curtis Mader said. The board approved repairs from Barry Tractor in a not-to-exceed amount of $56,400 to allow for contingency; the estimate excludes freight. Commissioner Darren Jackson made the motion, Vice Chair Kelly Herzet seconded, and the motion carried 4-0.
Mader also noted related operational items: three county mowers are currently inoperable and chip-seal roadwork is scheduled to begin Monday.
