Longtime city attorney retires after 38 years; assistant named successor

Mayor Neil Ramsey announced that City Attorney John McGarvey officially retired as of the March 10 Anchorage City Council meeting after 38 years of service. Ramsey thanked McGarvey, calling him "invaluable" for his knowledge of city history, law and connections. McGarvey said it "was his professional pleasure to have served three mayors and many city council members over the 38 years, as well as serving the Fire Department."
Assistant City Attorney Richard Edwards was announced by Mayor Ramsey as the new City Attorney and was welcomed by Council. The minutes record the naming as an announcement; no separate confirmation vote is recorded in the March 10 minutes.
