Wayne County hears housing study showing population decline and rising home prices

Urban Partners Principal Issac Kwon and Associate Amy Cunniff joined the Wayne County Commissioners via Zoom on July 23 to present an updated housing study for the county. The consultants told commissioners the county’s population has declined, average household size has fallen, and the average price of homes in Wayne County has doubled over the past seven years. Ryanne Jennings of the Wayne County Community Foundation said the Wayne Tomorrow! Housing task force will host four community meetings this fall to present the findings to the public.
Commissioner Jocelyn Cramer said the board will share the report with township and municipal leaders to help local planning. The study’s findings — falling population and smaller households alongside rising prices — were described by Urban Partners as making Wayne County’s housing challenges more acute than in some other rural communities because of proximity to nearby metro areas. The presentation did not include new funding commitments; commissioners discussed broader outreach and next steps for public engagement.
