Commission staff recapped Play Like a Girl, an annual community event that combined sports demos, interactive stations and sponsor-run activities.
Eva and Shelly described the event as one of the department's largest single-day activities, with an estimated 1,300 attendees and 31 stations. "We're estimating about 1,300," Eva said when asked about attendance, adding that the event had more attendees than the previous year and attracted families across age groups.
Organizers highlighted appearances by professional and collegiate athletes (Dana Vollmer among those named), demonstrations by Cal diving and water polo teams, and community partners that ran interactive stations (Dress Best for Less, RK Roofing and Construction, Toro Toro Property Company among sponsors). The event included multiple sport stations, powerlifting and rowing demonstrations and, organizers said, produced strong volunteer and sponsor engagement.
Staff said the event will return next year with planning already underway, and recommended starting certain demonstrations earlier to allow attendees to see more activities and reduce overlap with other programming.
Next steps: staff will preserve photos and event documentation for future promotion and will adjust scheduling for next year's event to reduce overlaps between demonstrations and stations.
