Trustees asked staff to add a concise definition of a 'restorative circle' to either the policy or the administrative guideline so that handbook language and practice are consistent across buildings. One trustee said the board wanted the policy to include an intention statement noting restorative circles are a learning-oriented meeting between involved students and affected parties.
A staff member described restorative circles as a facilitated, face-to-face meeting in which involved students identify what happened, take responsibility and communicate with affected peers. Trustees agreed to include a short explanatory paragraph in the restorative-practices language and to place it under the appropriate AG section so schools can reference it in handbooks.
