Commissioners press for stronger water and wetland protections in Stamford plan

Commissioners and residents returned repeatedly to concerns about water resources, hydrology mapping and whether current zoning accounts for sensitive stream corridors and wetlands. One resident warned that small, individual alterations add up: "We're running out of ground water," the resident said, noting cumulative impacts from filling wetlands and drainage changes.

Members discussed options ranging from using state mapping tools (Natural Resources Atlas and other datasets) to hiring a professional consultant to identify water-resource locations and to inform zoning or bylaw changes. Commissioners agreed the plan update is an appropriate time to put explicit policy language on water resources that would then be implemented through land-use regulations and bylaws.
