Union City authorizes CDBG application and outlines repairs after sinkholes at Municipal Lot #1

Union City Borough Council on Sept. 16 approved submitting a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) application to Erie County seeking up to $100,000 toward stormwater repairs in Municipal Lot #1. The motion, moved by Councilor Steadman and seconded by Councilor Osborn, carried unanimously.
Streets Supervisor Bob Phillips reported that he and Manager Cindy Wells met with Solicitor Tim Wachter about sinkholes at Municipal Lot #1. Phillips said Mansfield will fill the sinkhole, replace approximately 10 feet of pipe and install a new catch basin; after that work is completed, the borough plans to perform a smoke and dye test. The borough is awaiting quotes from JT Patching and Paving and Cross Paving to pave the area and the catch-basin area in Municipal Lot #2. Business owners in the area and the Union City Volunteer Fire Department will be notified before smoke testing.
Council’s approval of the CDBG application is limited to seeking funds; any award or contract would require separate acceptance and potential appropriation. Repair work timing depends on contractor availability and the grant outcome.
