Harmony Magnet students win county Academic Decathlon; parents and teachers urge retention of dance classes

At the Feb. 26, 2026 meeting of the Governing Board of Trustees of Porterville Unified School District, Kim Marsh, a teacher at Harmony Magnet Academy, recognized the school’s Academic Decathlon Team for winning the Tulare County Academic Decathlon Championship for the fourth consecutive year and achieving the highest cumulative team score in school history. The board noted the team will represent Porterville Unified at the state competition.
A principal (Mr. Brown) also reported on Harmony’s academic programs, including honor roll designation, AP exam outcomes and improvements in math, and highlighted upcoming events such as a mental health day and a MESA collaboration. During oral communications, Harmony dance teacher Holly Jones and parent Jennifer Robertson urged the board to maintain a dedicated dance instructor and keep stand-alone dance classes as part of the Performing Arts Pathway.
Board members, including Trustee Pedro Martinez and President Lillian Durbin, expressed support for staff and for studying graduation credit requirements at Citrus High School; Mr. Pedro Martinez specifically supported naming a dance studio in honor of a former folkloric dance instructor. No policy changes were taken at this meeting; staff were asked to note community interest.
