Tompkins County Legislature elects Michael (Mike) Lane as 2016 chair

Michael (Mike) Lane was elected chair of the Tompkins County Legislature during its organizational meeting.
The temporary chair, Peter Stein, opened nominations before members moved and seconded Lane’s nomination. After closing nominations, the temporary chair called for a vote; the clerk noted 13 members present and Lane was declared elected. Lane thanked colleagues and constituents from the Dryden/Freeville area for their support. "Thanks again to Peter Stein for chairing our meeting to start out with," Lane said after the vote.
The outcome follows several tributes to Lane’s prior service: Jim Dennis and Dave McKenna described Lane’s experience and leadership during their nominations speeches. The legislature moved immediately to select a vice chair and then to routine business after the election.
The legislature recessed into further agenda items after formalizing the leadership, with Lane presiding for the remainder of the meeting.
