Shawnee High School task force proposes shift to 24-credit diploma beginning 2026-27

Dianne DeYoung, counselor for Shawnee High School, told the Board of Education that the Secondary Education Graduation Credits task force is proposing a major change to how the district counts credits for graduation. "Starting with the 2026-2027 school year, they are proposing a transition to a 24 credit graduation system and each course receiving a 0.5 credit per semester," DeYoung said in the presentation portion of the agenda.
Under the current model described in the presentation, Shawnee requires 50 semester-credit units where each course counts as 1.0 credit per semester. The task force proposal would convert course weighting to 0.5 credit per semester and reduce the total credit requirement to 24, a change the presentation notes would still exceed the state minimum of 23 credits. The plan would begin with the 2026–2027 school year if adopted by the board.
School leaders framed the change as an update to align course offerings and credits with career pathways and scheduling needs. The presentation did not include a board vote on the proposal during this special session; the minutes indicate it was presented for consideration.
