Council authorizes replacement patrol vehicle after costly repair estimate

Colfax police sought approval June 15 to add a replacement patrol vehicle after one unit required major repairs. Chief Michael Melcher told the council the repair estimate for the transfer case and transmission was $8,000, and he presented two used replacement options: a 2013 Dodge Durango with about 42,000 miles priced at $8,800 from the Department of Enterprise Services and a fully equipped 2018 Ford with about 72,000 miles priced at $9,000 from the Town of Garfield.
Melcher said current fleet mileages are approximately 33,000; 152,000; and 114,000 miles and that purchasing would yield four frontline vehicles and better position the department for the coming decade. Councilmember Golden moved to approve Resolution 26-11; Councilmember McRae seconded and the resolution passed on a roll-call vote with all members voting yes.
The council did not adopt additional fleet-replacement policy language during the meeting; Chief Melcher presented the immediate purchase as a remedy to an existing out-of-service vehicle and outlined the two available used options and their prices.
