Subcommittee adds Boones Creek to regional tourism district, allows local sales-tax funding for infrastructure

The Cities and Counties Subcommittee unanimously advanced House Bill 1796, which would add Boones Creek in Washington County to the Regional Tourism Development District Act of 2019 and allow municipalities to use sales tax revenue generated inside the district to fund infrastructure projects.
"It allows local governments to use sales tax revenue generated within the district to fund infrastructure and related improvements," said Representative Hicks, the bill sponsor, noting Washington County Commission had passed support unanimously.
Members asked whether local governments would need state permission to close streets or take other actions inside a tourism district; Representative Hicks replied that certain permissions could be required. The committee adopted amendment 15,951 and voted 7-0 to move the bill to the next available State & Local Government calendar.
