RTA president asks board to reconsider fog-closure make-up day

During public comment at the May 11 meeting, Felicia Martinez, president of the Richland Teachers Association, asked the Board to reconsider requiring teachers to make up the fog-related closure from Feb. 5, 2026. Martinez cited the RTA contract language on state waivers, past district practice, actions by neighboring districts, and the timing of the closure notification in support of the request.
Martinez said the association’s request was "intended to recognize and honor the dedication of its members." Board members did not act immediately on the request during the public comment period; later in the meeting the Board received public notice of initial successor proposals from both the RTA and the District pursuant to Government Code section 3547 and indicated public hearings will be scheduled as part of the collective bargaining process.
