The Comal County Commissioners Court on Sept. 5 approved a proclamation recognizing September 2024 as Suicide Prevention Month and heard local mental-health leaders describe outreach, trainings and crisis services available in the county.
Jennifer Nieto, center director for Comal County's mental health clinic at Hill Country Mental Health and Developmental Disability Centers, described the county's mobile crisis outreach activity and urged residents to attend free trainings at the McKenna Center. "My name is Jennifer Nieto. I am the center director for Comal County's, mental health clinic here," she told the court, outlining outreach efforts and local partnerships. An assistant director reminded the public that "there is now a mental health emergency that's nationwide. It's 988," and urged people to save the number and contact the crisis team when needed.
Public-health staff had earlier noted the county's mobile crisis outreach assessed approximately 800 suicidal individuals in the previous 12 months, with roughly 280 reporting a lifetime suicide attempt. Commissioners approved the proclamation on a unanimous voice vote and commissioners thanked local clinic staff for their partnership in prevention and outreach.
