Terry Deo, chairman of the Mapleton Senior Citizens Committee, urged Mapleton residents to step forward as volunteers to support the group’s monthly luncheons and programming. Deo said the events offer healthy meals and a range of presenters designed to meet seniors’ needs and called community service “the most amazing thing that you can do.”
Deo said about "25% of our Mapleton community that is senior citizens," and described the committee’s mix of practical programming — from "how to use your cell phone" sessions to entertainment such as an Elvis impersonator — as central to keeping seniors engaged. "What gets me out of bed to show up and do this service is the smiles," Deo said, adding that the committee’s roughly 16 members share the work and welcome new volunteers. The remarks served as a direct call to action for residents to identify interests and find volunteer niches within the committee.
