Village manager says talks may start on merging local fire departments into a regional authority

Haselden said she also raised the possibility that the new authority could evolve into a Public Safety Authority including police services; she reported both other parties were agreeable to starting discussions. "The Laurium Village Manager and the Calumet Township Supervisor would like to begin concrete discussions and planning for the possibility of merging the three fire departments into a Fire Safety Authority that serves all 3 communities," she told council.
Council provided preliminary discussion but did not take formal action; the item was presented as direction-seeking and to determine whether the manager should move forward with initial talks and planning.
