Planning commission readies ordinance to limit recreational marijuana retailers to two, seeks school‑zone reduction

Trustee Kelly Ryan, reporting for the Planning Commission and assisted by Chris Green, said the commission will forward a proposed ordinance that would limit adult‑use recreational marijuana retailers to two within the village’s commercial corridor.
Ryan said that because of the proposed locations, the council would need to approve trimming the federal school drug‑free zone from 1,000 feet to 500 feet to allow retail operations in the targeted corridor. "The ordinance is ready to come to Council for review and will be on the August work session agenda," Ryan stated during the update.
Ryan provided background on licensing and municipal revenue potential, and Green provided additional history about marijuana licensing and sales in Michigan since legalization. The Planning Commission also reported ongoing work with the Office of Rural Prosperity on the Master Plan to coordinate resources.
The council did not take a formal vote on the ordinance during the July 8 work session; the item was described as scheduled for review at the August work session, giving council members and the public more opportunity for input before any formal action.
