Hillsborough County honors Zoo Tampa manatee care team with conservation award

The Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners presented the 2026 Theodore Roosevelt Hillsborough Forever Conservation Award to staff from Zoo Tampa at Lowry Park in recognition of the Manatee Critical Care Center's conservation work.
Katie with Hillsborough County Communications said the team has been active for more than 30 years and reported, "To date, they've rescued more than 635 manatees and returned 356." County staff credited the center's rescue, rehabilitation and public education efforts with helping residents and visitors understand how to protect manatees and preserve Florida's waterways.
The award highlights long-term county support for wildlife rehabilitation and public outreach. County communicators said the recognition was presented during the April 15 meeting as part of the board's routine acknowledgements.
