Benzie County commissioners pause budget decisions, move further review to next meeting

The Benzie County Board of Commissioners met in a special session on July 21, 2026, to continue review of the proposed 2026–2027 fiscal-year budget. The meeting, called to order by Chairman Art Jeannot at 10:30 a.m. in the Frank Walterhouse Board of Commissioners Room in Beulah, included presentations from department representatives and a review of the capital list.
Commissioner Rhonda Nye moved and Commissioner Gary Sauer seconded approval of the meeting agenda at the start of the session. The motion carried on a unanimous vote of the seven commissioners present. Several department heads outlined requests for increases to personnel and contract accounts; County Administrator Katie Zeits said she will prepare a summary of the requested increases for the board to consider.
The board reached consensus to postpone final decisions and continue deliberations at the next Board of Commissioners meeting rather than concluding budget votes in the special session. The meeting minutes record that continued discussion will be moved to the next meeting, and the board did not adopt final budget figures at the July 21 session.
The special meeting closed after procedural business; commissioners are scheduled to revisit the budget requests and the administrator transition at an upcoming meeting.
