Benzie County commissioners review department budget requests in special meeting

The Benzie County Board of Commissioners met in a special session July 13, 2026, to review department budget requests for the 2026–2027 fiscal year. Chairman Art Jeannot opened the meeting at 10:30 a.m.; six commissioners were present and one (Bob Roelofs) was absent.
Presenters from multiple county departments and partner agencies outlined requests and shortfalls. Highlights included a $15,000 request from the Frankfort City-County Airport, a 3% funding increase requested by the Benzie Leelanau Health Department, proposed staffing and equipment increases for Animal Control, 911 budget shortfalls and staffing concerns, an EMS station remodel and a requested Deputy Director position, and Emergency Management's wage-reimbursement and fleet expenses. County Administrator Katelyn Ziets presented the remaining General Fund figures, explicitly excluding the Sheriff's Department budget.
The board approved the meeting agenda at the start of the session and recessed for a 12:12 p.m. break; it reconvened at 12:20 p.m. No formal budget adoptions or votes on the departmental requests were recorded at the meeting. The meeting adjourned at 1:58 p.m.
