Legislature approves bridge-rail upgrades, road improvements and $2.6M paving program

On Feb. 24 the Ways and Means Committee approved multiple transportation-safety capital items: $763,000 for bridge-rail upgrades on an initial set of county-owned bridges, $300,000 for County Road Improvements to respond to drainage and guide-rail problems, and $2,600,000 for highway paving (with $500,000 bonding and $2.1M from CHIPS).
Deputy Commissioner Ryan McGuire described planned rail improvements that add new face-mounted rail and flared transitions to reduce vehicles leaving the roadway. Erik Denega reported the county maintains about 302 miles of road and expects to resurface roughly 20–25 miles this year, using a pavement-condition index to prioritize work; he said the county's current pavement condition index is about "89," which he described as strong. The motions passed unanimously and staff said they will return with schedules and any additional roads added if bid prices permit.
