Payson council approves consent agenda; councilors raise concern over Meals on Wheels wait list

Payson’s City Council approved its consent agenda at the July 1 meeting, including minutes from the June 17 meeting, an interlocal agreement with Utah County for a drug-prevention program and a contract supporting Meals on Wheels’ congregate meal program for fiscal year 2027.
During the consent discussion, a council member asked about eligibility and who refers people to Meals on Wheels. The mayor said recipients must be essentially homebound and that referrals can come from family members or staff. “They they currently have, over 200 people that are on a waiting list that cannot get in there because they don't have the funding,” the mayor said, noting the program relied on COVID-era funds that are no longer available and that a Giving Tree effort and an established nonprofit are helping to fill gaps.
Councilors were told impact on local residents extends countywide and staff encouraged volunteer support for meal deliveries. The council moved and seconded the consent agenda and approved it by roll call.
