Potter County near jail capacity; commissioners form planning committee for expansion

Sheriff’s staff told commissioners on Nov. 12 that the Potter County jail population stood at 639, with 87 females and about 82% of inmates classified as felons. The sheriff said the county was close to statutory capacity and was using out‑of‑county beds in several counties to house overflow inmates.
In response, the court discussed appointing a committee to oversee a proposed detention center expansion. Commissioners proposed including a county attorney, purchasing and facilities staff, one or more commissioners, a citizen representative from each precinct, a code‑enforcement or medical operations representative and law‑enforcement leadership on the committee. The matter was continued to allow commissioners to nominate citizen representatives and to finalize committee membership; the sheriff and project staff said captain and operations personnel would participate.
The court did not commit to a funding approach at the Nov. 12 meeting; commissioners noted prior use of a citizens’ advisory committee during other county projects and said public buy‑in would be helpful if a bond or funding ask is later required.
