Council member Kate Telles (District 2) said the council held a public hearing on the one-year data center moratorium passed last month and that the city will use the pause to study regulatory options.
"During the moratorium, an internal city work group will partner with the Climate Resilience and Sustainability Board and the Plan Commission to research policy options, gather data, and engage stakeholders before recommending regulations for future data center proposals," Telles said. She described the groupas responsible for preparing recommendations to guide future permits and proposals.
Telles also stressed the limits of municipal authority, noting the city can regulate data centers only within city limits and urging advocacy beyond the city. "Because the city can only regulate data centers within city limits, it is important to also advocate to your county commissioners and state legislatures to ensure that protection extends throughout our entire region," she said.
Next steps are limited to the work group's research and stakeholder engagement; Telles did not provide a timeline for when the group will deliver recommendations or when any proposed regulations would appear before the council.
