Rose of Visit Spokane updated the committee on recent marketing, sales and economic development work, stressing the organization’s role in tourism and event attraction.
On FIFA, Rose said the fan‑zone and watch parties drove high local engagement: "We had almost 1,000,000 people see all of our advertising…10,300 people came to the website from the Spokane region," she said, and noted local partners including Spokane Transit Authority helped drive attendance. She said the second watch party canceled due to smoke, but marketing results were strong and a fuller digital report will be shared around August 15.
On conventions and sales, Rose reported Visit Spokane has secured about 24,000 contracted room nights in FY 2026 pipeline and characterized that as roughly a $25 million economic impact if events materialize. She said Visit Spokane is also working with higher‑education partners (Gonzaga, Whitworth and community colleges) on recruitment and relocation strategies tied to economic development.
On film and events, Rose described a new three‑year pilot position to prospect film work and help streamline event permitting. She noted recent productions already generated measurable room nights (citing a Firestone tire commercial that produced about 140 rooms) and said the pilot employee will work to recruit more productions and coordinate permitting for on‑location shoots and large events.
Rose also warned that the Tourism Promotion Area (TPA) $5 per room night assessment is at legislative risk: staff asked for council support on state legislation to keep the $5 level rather than drop to $2 per room night. She offered to share evidence and convene a local task force as the legislative session approaches.
Next steps: Visit Spokane will provide a more detailed August 15 report; council members expressed interest in incentives and streamlined permitting to attract film and large‑scale events.
