District reports: testing prep, declines in physical altercations and suspensions, and ongoing hiring efforts

Directors from Hazel Crest School District briefed the board on operational and instructional items during the Feb. 17 meeting.
Dr. Angle Diggs, Director of Special Services, said the department is aligning attendance codes to state requirements, preparing a corrective action plan for early childhood intervention services and scheduling Power School registration work for 2026–27. The department is also preparing test coordinators for DLM testing. Dr. Antoinette Gray, Director of Teaching and Learning, described data-driven instructional practices to prepare teachers for spring testing and highlighted a 52.9% decrease in physical altercations and a 49.6% decrease in out-of-school suspensions; she also noted the after-school academic program ends Feb. 27, 2026. Human Resources Director Shemeka Fountain reported continued interviews for paraprofessionals and teachers and said district staff will attend a job fair this Thursday at Illinois State University and additional fairs at Eastern Illinois University and National Louis University. Joe Sierra, Director of Buildings and Grounds, reported on boiler repairs at the administration building, monitoring new smart water meter readings at Barack Obama Learning Academy and coordinating with city/public works and district finance to resolve billing discrepancies.
