Brook Park pilots Smart Pass, expands CKLA and 'Math Mix-Up' under SIP goals

Curriculum director Cathy Cannon told the board the district's Institute Day focused on building-level School Improvement Plan work to deepen instructional coherence. At Brook Park, staff described 4/5 CKLA (Core Knowledge Language Arts) implementation and vertical articulation, early literacy small-group strategies with reading specialists, and consideration of five math programs as a next step in a multi-year improvement plan aligned to the ISBE Numeracy Plan.
Cannon also described a Brook Park pilot of Smart Pass technology to track student movement and hallway use to inform supervision and transitions, Defined Learning project-based activities to deepen critical thinking, and a "Math Mix-Up" model for differentiated math instruction. She highlighted SIP Goals #1 (Math Instruction), #2 (Strengthen Systems/Structures) and #3 (Culture/Connectedness) and staff initiatives such as a "Vibe Tribe" recognition program and design work on a staff Wellness Room.
