Program assistants and residents press Cicero SD 99 for clarity on job cuts, ICE fears and safety

Several community members addressed the board during the public comment period on Jan. 14 with concerns about staffing reductions, immigration enforcement and school safety.
Sonia Martinez, a program assistant at Lincoln School, said program assistants are worried about rumors of job losses and asked how notices and selection for any reductions in force would be handled, specifically whether seniority would govern decisions. Maria Tovar, another program assistant, asked why money is being spent on new facilities if there will be staff reductions and requested greater transparency about how empty classrooms would be used.
Joanna Vasquez, representing a Cicero/Berwyn support group for families with children in District 201, told trustees that recent ICE arrests have created fear among parents and asked the district to provide transportation for students in need, develop an emergency preparedness plan (including localized soft lockdowns if ICE is within a half‑mile), and offer outreach and “know your rights” education. Mr. Rodriguez, an attorney and activist, urged the board to consider health and psychological services for students affected by recent events and asked for a district statement within days.
Leticia, a security guard at Unity Jr. High, said double parking during drop‑off at Liberty School is a safety problem and requested parking enforcement or targeted patrols. Superintendent Dr. Calderin asked requesters to provide contact information to administrators so staff could follow up.
