Play Illinois representative Margaret Chaidez presented the District 112 Board of Education with designs for an inclusive Sherwood Elementary playground that would replace the existing play area on the south end of the new building.
The proposed 4,000-square-foot play area is designed to accommodate approximately 161 children, feature 49 play events including climbing equipment, spinning elements, slides and swings, and provide quiet, shaded spaces. Materials presented to the board specify a poured-in-place rubber surface to ensure accessibility and safety for students of all abilities. The estimated project cost was reported as $381,751 and the vendor team indicated the installation would occur over the summer.
Board members voiced support for the proposal during the presentation; district staff said the project will be brought back for board approval at the March 17 regular meeting.
