Board Debates Gold Honor-Cord Criteria as Staff Prepares Mastery Data

Giles School representative Mr. Biedke explained that the cords are awarded based on mastery across standards and that currently a single yellow (partial mastery) could disqualify a student from the gold cord. Board member Theophannie Theodore and others asked whether a numerical threshold (for example, a 3.8 GPA-style comparator) could be used instead; Mr. Biedke and Superintendent Mrs. Guzik said staff will compile data to show how many more cords would have been awarded under different thresholds.
The board discussed phasing any change — first presenting mastery data in October, then considering a redesign of grading if warranted. "We will show them upfront where they are eligible a little sooner and work towards them getting it. This would ease the process," Mr. Biedke said. Trustees expressed concern about consistency for students who later attend Ridgewood High School, and asked for comparative figures showing historical cord counts.
