The Norridge School District 80 board heard a presentation on attendance and tardy policy Sept. 16 that emphasizes early intervention and family support.
Mr. Preble outlined a three-tier attendance model (Tier 1: ~80% of students; Tier 2: 15%; Tier 3: 5%) and described communication and intervention thresholds at 5, 9, 15 and 17 absences. He emphasized lost learning time from frequent tardiness — "if a student is late by 10 minutes daily, that is 30 hours per year of lost learning time" — and described incentives such as the "Stay Cool, Be in School" freeze-pop campaign and pizza parties for strong attendance.
Superintendent Mrs. Guzik and building staff told trustees the Village has previously issued tickets to families for chronic truancy, and the district works with family court and the judge to secure compliance. Board members asked whether doctor appointments count as excused absences; staff confirmed the district uses separate codes for excused and unexcused absences and that health visits are handled under the excused code. The presentation included reminders of statutory deadlines for immunizations and physicals for specific grade levels that could affect a student’s return to school if records are not filed.
