Mount Vernon SD 80 says summer feeding program served 554,654 meals

Superintendent Ryan Swan reported to the board that the district's SUN Meals to Go summer feeding program operated May 30–Aug. 7, 2025, and delivered a total of 554,654 meals to children ages 1–18 across Southern Illinois.
Swan provided the program breakdown the board recorded: 267,023 lunches and 267,023 breakfasts served via drive-thru distribution; 10,304 lunches and 10,304 breakfasts delivered to students in Willow Springs and Mays Manor housing areas. He said the effort was staffed by 42 employees, largely district food-service staff, aides and teachers, supplemented by hires from other districts and former AmeriCorps members. "The program was a huge success, and far exceeded our initial goal of serving 350,000 meals this summer!" the report stated.
The board did not vote on additional funding at the meeting; Superintendent Swan also noted the state owes the district $4,297 as of July 31, 2025, a separate administrative item in his report.
Board members praised the scale of distribution and the use of drive-thru and delivery methods to reach students who live in district housing areas.
