Board declines naming request for Casey gym; discusses bull sculpture at Dr. Nick Osborne Primary Center

A former Casey Middle School student requested that the Casey gym be named after a past basketball coach. The building committee recommended against naming the facility at this time and suggested alternatives, such as a wall in the gym recognizing successful coaches. "A motion by Daniels, seconded by Nunnery to forgo any naming right at this time, and to explore more options to recognize coaches in the past and future" passed with Ayes from Daniels, Nunnery, Flanigan, Blok and Jackson and no Nays recorded.
Board members also discussed concerns raised about a bull sculpture in front of Dr. Nick Osborne Primary Center; some expressed worry the design included pagan or satanic symbolism. Superintendent Ryan Swan said the sculpture was donated by Cedarhurst and designed by Jack Goldman, has been on site since 2002 and includes a sun design used in science lessons. The board did not remove the sculpture at the meeting and asked Swan to update them if further discussion is needed.
