Mount Vernon SD 80 reports successful summer programs; summer school averaged 104 students daily

Superintendent Ryan Swan reported that summer school ran May 28–June 24 at J.L. Buford Intermediate Center and averaged 104 students daily in grades K–8. The district provided breakfast and lunch and extended programming included community presentations: the YMCA offered karate, cheerleading, soccer and basketball; Dan Mings spoke about the MVTHS football program; Brehm Library presented twice; U of I Extension delivered Ag in the Classroom; and Priyanka Kaushal presented on Food Allergy Awareness. "Attendance averaged 104 students daily, grades K-8," the minutes state.
Special Education summer school was scheduled July 7–25 at Dr. Nick Osborne Primary Center. The board noted a parent cookout closed the summer program and that staff, parents and students provided positive feedback about the program's success.
