Maywood SD 89 honors chess, wrestling, cheer and basketball teams at March board meeting

At the March 12 meeting the Maywood School District 89 Board recognized multiple student teams and individual athletes for recent competitive achievements.
Coach Jeff Hepburn and others were acknowledged after the IESA State Chess Tournament (Feb. 27–28, Peoria), where Joseph Rosaco was named second-place runner-up in the 8th grade division and the team placed 17th out of 61. The U-89 wrestling co-op (Irving, Stevenson Middle School, Washington Dual Language Academy) was celebrated for conference and IESA State Sectional recognitions; coaches named included Khrisopher "Budda" Argue, Sherelle Johnson, Ryan Hannah and Jason James, and wrestlers cited included Corieon Hall, Tyron Pitts, Leo Giron, Aletha Bohn, Andre Sutton, Khalil Abdullah and Zaiki Holman.
Roosevelt Elementary's cheer team, coached by Diamond Portee and Rena Campbell, was recognized as conference champions. Washington Dual Language Academy's girls' and boys' basketball teams were also honored as conference champions; Coach Ashford James and players including Kamari Dugger, Layla Williams, Amyria Smith, Cayden Gosberry-Johnson and Noah Delgado were named and took a group picture with the board.
