Board backs Safe Routes to School grant application for JW Eater Junior High

The Rantoul City Schools Board voted unanimously to pass a resolution supporting a joint application with the Village of Rantoul for an Illinois Department of Transportation Safe Routes to School grant aimed at improvements along Wabash Avenue at JW Eater Junior High. Board member John Brotherton moved the resolution with Moto Johnson seconding; the motion carried 7–0.
Board materials state the district's anticipated contribution, if the grant is awarded, is $35,000 for engineering and $25,000 for construction, payable in fiscal year 2026–27; there is no commitment of funds until an award is made. Dr. Woods described the work as being in the early planning stages: "we are at the beginning of planning and as more information is available it will be provided to the board." The board adopted the resolution to meet application requirements and allow the district to pursue the grant with local partners.
