District staff explained recent statutory and workforce realities have made hiring registered nurses without a Professional Educator License (PEL) necessary. Dr. Schuchman told the board the district employs three nurses (Pre-K–2, 3–5, 6–12) and has offered pay aligned with the teacher salary schedule to promote equity and retention, but one nurse expressed disappointment at perceived pay parity concerns.
Board member Andrew Johnson reported a nurse told him that comparable public-sector positions pay more and losing experienced nurses could lead to hiring less-experienced replacements at the same salary. Following discussion, the board voted 6-0 to table creation of a nurse salary schedule to allow staff to develop options that address pay equity and recruitment.
