Carlinville board adopts 10-point scale, weighted high‑school grades and K–2 standards-based report cards

The Carlinville Community Unit School District No. 1 Board of Education voted Feb. 16 to adopt a district-wide 10-point grading scale, introduce weighted grades for designated high-school courses and move Kindergarten through second grade to standards-based report cards.

Board discussion followed a presentation from teachers and district staff documenting inconsistent historic grading practices (7-point and 10-point scales across different grade bands). CMS and CHS teachers reported a unanimous survey in favor of a weighted GPA for AP and dual-credit courses and said adopting a uniform 10-point scale would ease grade transfers and align with many colleges’ expectations. "The idea behind the weighted GPA is to encourage students to enroll in rigorous courses," the teachers’ summary reported during the meeting.

Supervising staff recommended implementing weighted grades beginning with the current sophomore class and expanding standards-based reporting in early grades to improve clarity about student progress. The board approved the combined package by voice vote (6-0) on a motion by Maya Reid, seconded by Brandon Little.

District officials said the change aims to reduce parent and teacher confusion caused by differing historical scales and to recognize rigor for college admissions and scholarships. Implementation steps, timelines and communication to families were not detailed at the meeting and will be provided to building staff and parents as part of rollout planning.
