Mississippi House pauses business pending Senate action on youth court bill

The Mississippi House of Representatives voted to recess subject to call and later adjourn until 10:00 a.m. tomorrow while it awaited the Senate's final action on a youth court (youth corps) bill. The Speaker told members the Senate had "taken the youth corps bill up in committee, and it's passed out of committee," and that the House should wait to see the Senate's final product before considering appropriation bills tied to the measure.

The Speaker said the decision to pause was pragmatic because appropriation bills would depend on the form of the general bill coming from the Senate. "We certainly can't take up an appropriation bill not knowing how this final product is gonna be," he said. He asked members to make sure they could be contacted by phone about reconvening and said committees would meet as scheduled if the Senate did not send its bill.
