A student speaker, Grace Maroney, addressed the Hernando County School Board during the public comment period to urge respectful conduct at meetings. Maroney said she frequently attends meetings and described behavior she considered discordant with the standards taught in classrooms, urging board members to set a higher example for students.
"I've been coming to these meetings a lot more, and all I hear is what's amount to drama," Maroney said, calling for politeness, understanding, and kindness from leaders who serve as role models. She told board members that when adults act disrespectfully, students see that conduct as acceptable and asked the board to demonstrate better standards.
Board members acknowledged the comment during closing remarks and thanked speakers for participating in the public input process.
