Department heads and the county judge told commissioners the courthouse has inconsistent job classifications and pay rates that have left long-serving employees with lower pay than newer hires in similar roles. The judge stressed the risk of losing experienced staff: "I'm at risk of losing my employees if I don't get close to a 10% raise," he said, urging commissioners to take wage-study results seriously.
Commissioners and staff agreed a systematic reset is needed: the county engaged a consultant (Erwin Wagner) to complete a wage study, scheduled for delivery Aug. 15, which the board will review before making salary adjustments targeted primarily at courthouse staff. The chair reiterated the county's intent to make decisions after digesting study findings and to prioritize fairness within classifications.
