Prosecutor says amended budget filing omitted Axon software line; asks county to cover service
Summary
A county presenter said he mistakenly filed an amended budget using last year's file and omitted a $22,000 Axon Justice Premier line; he asked commissioners to create a county general line for the service in 2027 and to check whether both filings were advertised.

A presenter identified in the transcript as Chris told commissioners he filed an amended budget while on vacation and inadvertently used the 2026 file, which removed a requested $22,000 line for Axon Justice Premier services. He explained that Axon consolidates police reports, body-camera footage and related evidence into a shared platform and that the city of Austin already submits materials through Axon.
Chris said the county initially paid for Axon in 2026 and intended to move recurring costs to county general for 2027. He asked staff to confirm which filings were advertised and whether the original July 13 filing (which included the Axon line) or the rushed amended submission was the only advertised version. "I pulled up my 2026 budget proposal and made the amendments off of that," he said, describing how the mistake altered several salary allocations and depositions lines.
Commissioners asked staff to compare Gateway records and return with the advertised version(s). They also discussed whether the prosecutor's requested Axon cost could instead be paid from litigation (lit) funds or be apportioned across funds that benefit from the system.
