Board hears update on locker‑room modernization, portables, playgrounds and solar plans

Business services staff provided an extended update on ongoing and planned facilities projects across the district, including a high‑school locker‑room modernization that will use a lease‑leaseback contract, temporary portables for interim housing and revised locker‑room layouts with team rooms and individual shower stalls.

Project staff said the lease‑leaseback approach trimmed construction duration from an expected 13 months to roughly eight months. “One of the benefits of doing this lease‑leaseback approach was that the duration of the project has been shrunk down to 8 months rather than 13 or so,” a facilities presenter said. The update also covered Baldwin Stocker portables and deep trenching for utilities, playground tile replacement and shade structures, roof replacements funded from deferred maintenance, and near‑term plans to submit solar drawings to the Division of State Architects so construction can start around the beginning of the next school year.

Staff noted minor trade‑offs — for example, removal of some trees to meet accessibility requirements, and the decision to hold school‑site carryover as unbudgeted in the adopted budget as part of the district’s deficit‑reduction plan — and said funding for major projects will come from a mix of Measure AS bond proceeds and other capital funds. The board asked about details such as shower stall design and whether projects are within DSA scope; staff said they will follow up with design clarifications and any required DSA approvals.
