District staff presented a first reading of Board Policy 50-30 (Student Wellness) at the Feb. 25 Arcadia Unified board meeting and explained how the revised policy aligns multiple existing policies and state mandates.
Derek Eslinger, who led the committee effort, described a revived Safe and Healthy Schools Committee that includes nutrition services, health services, counseling, facilities and parent/community engagement. Eslinger said the committee will coordinate annual and three-year assessments to align with the district’s LCAP cycle: “We meet about twice or...every 2 months,” he said.
Jim Anderson and others described how the policy was reorganized to reference specific operational policies (for example, physical education and nutrition) so updates to one area won’t require repeated edits across multiple documents. Board members asked for clarification about which office oversees assessments; Eslinger explained the oversight transitioned in practice to business-services staff who work closely with nutrition and risk-management teams.
No action was taken; staff asked the board to allow the updated policies to be brought forward to the consent agenda with the described changes after further review.
