Algonac schools prepare for new year with orientations, open houses and Wayfinder training

Administrators across the Algonac Community School District reported Aug. 25 that back-to-school activity is underway: high-school orientations were held for grades 10–12, grades 7–9 are scheduled for Aug. 26, and Algonquin Elementary and Millside Elementary have Open Houses on Aug. 27 and preschool Open House on Sept. 3.
Curriculum Director Melissa Hanners told the board teachers attended ThinkCERCA professional development on Aug. 20; chemistry and physics staff trained on Aug. 7; instructional materials have arrived except for K–5 Amplify; and both campuses will receive on-site training for the implementation of Wayfinder on the first day of school. The district also plans two-hour mentoring training for veteran staff to support new teachers. The board record notes the new college adviser, Jane Blair, will begin Oct. 1, 2025.
Staffing notes: Brooklynn Lestage and Amber Palicke reported a small number of paraprofessional vacancies at Algonquin Elementary and Millside; both schools identified specific new staff (Corrine Hallam, Julie Tolley, Alaina Carroll, Shannon VanBelle) who will start at the beginning of the academic year.
