The Benzie County Central Board of Education on Sept. 8 heard administrators warn that the state had not approved a budget and the district is operating under "worst case scenario" precautions as it monitors cash flow. Superintendent Erfourth told trustees Northern Michigan superintendents are preparing a joint message to legislators about the effect of a delayed budget and the risk to payments expected by the Oct. 1 state-aid deadline.
Director of Finance Danielle Banasiak explained how the district calculates taxable revenue and determines whether it is "in formula" or "out of formula," and she said the district is watching programs that have historically relied on state funding, including GSRP and CEP. The board was told audit preparations are set for Sept. 15–18 and that Title I FY26 funds have been accepted; Title II/III/IV allocations were released to the state, allowing an amended Consolidated Application to be prepared.
