Sheriff: RAGBRAI drew tens of thousands; county saw about 111 public-safety calls

Sheriff Joel Phillips told the Marshall County Board of Supervisors that RAGBRAI brought a large influx of riders and support crews through Marshalltown and other county locations and that local public-safety resources managed the event with volunteer and interagency support.
"When it comes down for public safety for calls for service, we had roughly, about a 111 calls for service," Phillips said, adding the county also fielded about 20 medical calls and eight mechanical issues with bicycles. He credited volunteers, shuttle services and coordination with city staff for keeping traffic moving and facilitating courthouse access when needed. Phillips said trash and grounds around the courthouse were well maintained and that most visitors left the area by the following morning.
Board members thanked the sheriff and volunteers for the coordination. The report was informational; no board action was required.
